Bengali New Year Celebration
My husband, Halim Shah, was proud to organize this year’s Bengali New Year Celebration held at the Royal Alberta Museum auditorium on April 25th, 2014. I created the event poster and provided coordination for our community’s celebration. We are very grateful to our sponsors and to the community for helping make the event a success as well as to the RAM for meeting our live and digital presentation requirements.
The event began with a slide presentation of our sponsors as people took their seats. When the audience was settled in I acted as emcee and introduced the following events. The Bengali celebration typically begins with a drum ceremony however we were unable to find a local, traditional group so great thanks go to the Edmonton Korean Community Centre Foundation and to their performers for delivering an energizing set. They were followed by a traditional Bengali dancer and singer.
The celebration was headlined by the amazingly talented LRB Rock Band from Bangladesh, on their third-stop of a cross-Canada tour. The crowd was so excited with the band that many were dancing in the aisles, crowding the stage, taking selfies from the edge of the stage to capture the band and generally having a wonderful time. One audience member in particular will be forever remembered for his energetic dance moves and uncontained enthusiasm at seeing the band and hearing the music.
Several ACI colleagues also attended the celebration in support of my efforts and of our community, and have expressed accolades for the presentation.
I would like to send a final thank you to all those in attendance who helped this cultural event be such a success.
